A brief look at some famous faces from Independent Television News (ITN) in the 1960s.

Plus, here’s two we can’t identify. Any suggestions?

The man on the left is Leonard Parkin

It isn’t, you know. Here’s Parkin in the same year – he looks nothing like the lefthand picture.

Chris Chataway?

Can’t be: at the time these photos were taken, he was an MP and therefore couldn’t, by law, be a presenter on ITN. But good guess!

Could one of them be Ivor Mills?

The thing that I remember the most about I.T.N. was the number of industrial disputes at I.T.N. Particularly the 1980 4 week dispute over the use of the new Electronic News Gathering E.N.G for short. It was about whether two or three men [and they were mostly men] in those days would operate the new E.N.G. Video Unit. A compromise was made. But this lead to exactly the same dispute with the A.C.T.T. and the late Alan Sapper which lead to I.T.V and Channel Four not transmitting the 1984 summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. However the I.T.V. management had the last laugh with the American Sci-fi series V got 2 million viewers beating the B.B.C. Olympic coverage at 2am in the morning which lead in tern lead to I.T.V starting 24 hour television Region by Region from 1985 until 1989. In memory of my late and lovely Mum. From her former disabled carer. Until we meet again. GOD BLESS!

Right is Richard Wakeley

The one on the left is Bill Treharne-Jones. Michael Nicholson died in 2016.
Although I was working with all these people in the 1960s, I don’t recognise the one on the right. I’m pretty certain it is not Chris Chataway (who died in 2014) because he had a very distinctive deep cleft on his chin. There are no pictures of Ivor Mills, who died in 1996.

Hi Jill – Bob Bateman was my dad and Margot (Wardle) Bateman,my mum, also at ITN. Dad died, as you will probably remember, at the tender age of 50 and I barely recall him as I was only 11 when he died and he was never around when I was little.
