Media Guardian diary

A little aside in the Media Guardian Diary revealed the comparative fortunes of the three main news channels in the UK… As Media Monkey explained to readers…

“Sky’s audiences slumped from 34,000 at 8pm, before the story broke, to 13,000 at 9pm. News 24 meanwhile extended its lead, from 46,000 at 8pm to 58,000 at 9pm. Viewers of the ITV News Channel might have been forgiven for thinking the turmoil at the FA was all Israel’s fault – at 9pm it switched to its scheduled John Pilger documentary, resulting in its audience soaring from 1,000 at 8pm to a 9,000 at 9pm.”

So at 8pm, 34,000 were watching Sky News, 46,000 were watching BBC News 24 and a pathetic 1,000 people were watching the ITV News Channel. It really does make you wonder why they’re even bothering in the first place – especially when their non-news coverage gains them nine times the audience they had an hour before.
