An organization, however large and complex, exists because of the people in it. And the people behind Associated-Rediffusion and Rediffusion, London, made it what it was - not only the first but also one of the leaders in British commercial television.
With an air of authority and sense of duty to public service broadcasting as well as entertainment - so much so that it was referred to as “The BBC with adverts” - the company was unique, and while primarily remembered for its game shows today, it should also be borne in mind that those shows subsidised some of the best drama and current affairs programming in the country during the initial phase of ITV.
