Gavin was born in County Durham in England and was active in music-making circles from a very early age. He graduated from Huddersfield University with first class honours, as well as receiving the Kruczynski Prize for Piano and the Davidson Prize for Distinction brought to the Institution. Music for dance has always played an important part in Gavin’s career. He began his professional career as a pianist and conductor for Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992. On leaving the company in 1998 he moved to London as a freelance conductor, composer, arranger and pianist. Gavin first worked with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in April 1998 on a CD of “British Light Music Discoveries”, and since then has gone on to a prolific recording career, with 40 CDs to date. He has also appeared with the orchestra both on the concert platform and in the ballet pit. His busy schedule now takes in substantial national and international work, involving companies such Adventures in Motion Pictures, English National Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, The Royal New Zealand Ballet and orchestras such as the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Scottish Festival Orchestra, the NZSO, the Münchner Rundfunksorchestra and the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. In 2001 Gavin began a lasting relationship with the Australian Pops Philharmonic Orchestra as conductor and arranger. In addition to his busy conducting schedule Gavin is also active as a composer and arranger, with recent successes including a one-act ballet, “Revolting Rhymes” (after Roald Dahl) and most notably a musical, “Little Women”, first performed in 2000 and revived in the West End in July 2002. |
