On
the cover of the 1976 yearbook we see Gerald Harper on the set of his
Yorkshire Television drama series, Hadleigh. Inside is a
sixteen-page feature all about the making of the programme.
The
book begins in familiar style with mugshots of the IBA's senior staff
including its Chairman, Lady Plowden, her deputy, Christopher Bland,
and Mary Warnock. This is followed by a foreward by Brian Young, the
Director General of the IBA, entitled An Informed Public.
On
the ITV pages, we are told of the increase over the last five years
of regional programmes, with the large networking companies now providing
six or seven hours per week of broadcasts targeted at their own areas.
On
the ILR pages there are now 19 radio stations listed. Many came on air
for the first time in 1975 and three would start broadcasting in 1976,
bringing to an end the first phase of the rollout of commercial radio
in the UK.
As with all IBA yearbooks, there are plenty of photographs illustrating
the diverse range of Independent Television programmes. The
children's programme Rainbow is represented by a picture of the
singing trio Jane Tucker, her husband Rod Burton and
Matthew Corbett. Dr David Bellamy features in a schools programme about
biology. And among scenes from classic ITV comedy shows such as Man About The
House, The Benny Hill Show and Rising Damp are stills
from now long-forgotten sitcoms Sadie It's Cold Outside and My Son
Reuben.
TV
& Radio 1976 was published in January 1976 and cost £1.30.
