The
Independent Television Authority plans, builds, and operates the nationwide
network of transmitting stations which brings ITV programmes to viewers
throughout the United Kingdom.
The
ITA's first transmitter went on the air at Croydon on 22nd September 1955.
At the end of 1967 the ITA's 32 transmitters cover about 98 per cent of the
population; and plans are in hand to build some 18 more VHF relay stations
during the next two years. The ITA and BBC are now bringing into service a
second network of UHF transmitters for the 625 line colour services
