International
broadcasting organisations have existed since regular radio broadcasts began in
the 1920s.
Famous
variants include 'Eurovision', aka the European Broadcasting Union, and the
Communist-bloc response 'Intervision' for eastern Europe.
A
non- governmental version of this is seen here with 'Intertel'. This was a
grouping of four television networks with a public-service ethos. Founded by
Rediffusion, it contained Australia's ABC, Canada's CBC, and the US National
Educational Television (later to become, effectively, PBS).
These
companies each produced one documentary feature per month, which were passed
around the group, ensuring that there would be an Intertel presentation every
week. Rediffusion networked these productions for ITV until Intertel disappeared
when Rediffusion lost its independence in 1968.
