TVTimes: Friday 10 July 1964 The Schedules Archive

Rediffusion's popular children's television programme, the 'Five O'Clock Club' was networked nationally and thousands of children joined the club that Rediffusion ran for the programme.

Despite its popularity, the programme was produced on a small budget by Rediffusion, and featured continuity announcers as presenters.

Louie Ramsey went on to be a famous actor, playing Inspector Wexford's wife Dora in the TVS series. Muriel Young was deputy to Redvers Kyle in the announcing team, and later moved to become a producer at Granada. She was replaced as an announcer by Jon Kelly.

The predecessors to 'News at Ten', together on a Friday night.

Beginning with two minutes of news (little or no filmed inserts being available, no more was needed), followed by 'Roving Report', ITN's international news segment.

Roving Report made the careers of several famous foreign correspondents with stories on world current affairs - Biafra, the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the war led by the US and Australia in Vietnam.

Dateline Westminster had the unenviable task of discussing the affairs of Parliament for 18 minutes without television pictures or even a radio feed to illustrate events.  Alistair Burnet got the bulk of his fame from this type of series, being seen as a laid-back, semi-cynical sketch reporter - a far cry from the professional face of ITN's News at Ten he would become some years later.
