TVWorld: 04 May 1968 The Schedules Archive

Wow!  A Sunday programme gets on the cover to TVWorld.  It must have been a slack week for ATV, who usually dominate the magazine - even to the point that some ABC programmes mysteriously lose their production credit (The Avengers, for instance) whilst other, ATV, shows are credited.

To be fair to both TVWorld and ATV, though, by this time ABC had taken its eye off the ball.  The schedules reveal how ABC, gearing up for the launch of Thames in July, were taking a lot more from ATV London than previously and repeating a number of programmes that the next season would feature a 'From Thames' banner.

A similar style can be seen from Rediffusion, also gearing up, though less happily, for Thames, during the week.  But perhaps the most notable thing is the total domination of the schedules by the Big Four.  Southern gets one sub-peaktime run out, and STV makes some of the schools programmes, but every other domestic programme is an ATV, Rediffusion, Granada or ABC production.

Clearly you can see why the ITA wanted to bring new blood into the system with LWT and YTV, and why the Big Four were to become the Big Five.  But for the time being, ITV is the Big Four.
