Of all the
upheavals in the contract changes of 1968, this week in London saw the biggest
changes.
Sunday
begins as usual with ATV London, this time for the last time ever in the
capital. Monday sees, again for the last time, Rediffusion come on
air. And then the changes begin, with Thames starting (for cricket) on
Tuesday morning, and continuing until Friday evening. Finally, at 7pm on
Friday, Londoners got to see their fourth TV company of the week come on air, as
the first ever hand-over between ITV franchises moved them from Thames to the
new London Weekend.
But it
was not to be so smooth. Whilst ATV and Rediffusion had their last nights
untroubled, Thames saw the beginnings of strike action knock out some of its
first productions. London Weekend fared worst of all - the announcer
managed to say little more than "This is London Weekend Television,
broadcasting from the London transmitter of the Independent Television
Authority" when all went dark.
London
Weekend's new schedule was not to be - ITV was on strike.
