The first
TVTimes, covering Thursday September 22nd to Saturday October 1st 1955.
The first programmes on day one were jointly presented by Associated-Rediffusion
Limited, the new weekday contractor, and Associated Broadcasting Company (within
a month renamed Associated TeleVision when Associated British Cinemas
complained), the weekend contractor.
The
first voice heard on independent television (more commonly known as
"ITA", Channel 9 or "the commercial") was that of Leslie
Mitchell, formerly of the BBC. He gave the opening announcement whilst the
band of the British Grenadiers played Elgar.
