And the
final entry in this log of ATV's first day. At 6pm sharp, the station goes
off-air for the 'toddlers truce'. The BBC Television Service does
likewise, although the BBC Home Service and BBC Light Programme stay on.
The BBC Third Programme takes to opportunity to come on air with a 1 hour 50
minute production of Ford Madox Ford's "The Good Soldier".
ATV came
back on air at 7pm, as did the BBC Television Service. Both start with
news, then ATV continues at 7.10 with a film, 'The Pickpocket', 7.15 has 'Around
the Town' and 7.45 has a police serial.
At 8.15pm
it's 'Showtime!', and at 9, a play, "Mid Level" by Berkley Mather.
The ITN news is at 10pm, and the day rounds off with the Jack Jackson Show at
10.15.
The whole
day is something of a mixed-bag of programming, but that was not
unintentional. It was thought at the time that a good service provided
something for everyone throughout the day. Instead of focusing on a
specific market - today it is generally the 15-35 age bracket - broadcasters
were aware that limited frequency availability meant that they had to be all
things to all men.
And while
ATV initially did not prosper - indeed, came close to bankruptcy and was propped
up by rival Associated Rediffusion who feared being asked to takeover at
weekends - the format of general entertainment with something for everybody did
- for the next 4 decades.
