Optimistically
aimed at men and women, this programme is a sign of a commercial television
company deciding to go head-to-head in competition with the BBC's 3 sports
services, thus producing the monopoly that sport had on Saturday afternoons on
television for most of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
ATV's
sports programme runs from 5.30pm until 6. The BBC Television Service has
had sport exclusively since 1.30pm, stopping for a film and children's
programmes at 4.30 and returning to sport at 4.55, also running to 6pm.
On the BBC
Light Programme - still listened to by millions more people than those who
watched television - sport was running from 2.40pm until 3, then 3.20 until
4.45. A break for a children's choir (of all things) and sport coverage
beings again at 4pm with football, motor racing at 4.30, football again at 4.35
(yes, seriously), and 'Sports Report' from 5pm until 6, thus also competing with
both television channels.
On the BBC
Home Service - the second most popular broadcast service and still at that point
regionalised - rugby can be heard from 3.30pm until 4.45, with a sports roundup
at 6.15 until 6.35, after the main evening news.
