Scottish
Television had always had a problem. The UK is based on
London. Government, big business, you name it - London is
the capital of the UK.
Whilst
most other areas in England manage perfectly well without the
metropolis, Scotland has always suffered from being so far
away. Culturally distinct, yes. Easy to reach, no.
But
the advertisers and their agencies were largely in the UK
capital.
The
1960s, though, were a 'can do' age. The wonders of modern
technology - the 'white heat' - were upon us. And
businessmen (it was still men only) had begun to take to the air
in order to reduce the distance between London and Paris, London
and Los Angeles, London and Sydney.
STV
have grabbed at this new wonder. You can look to the
future with Scottish Television, and you'll find its nearby
thanks to the wonders of that future and jet aeroplanes.
It
would take North Sea Oil before businessmen in London really
noticed the kingdom of the north. It would take devolution
and a new sense of Scots destiny before the people realised they
actually didn't need London, after all. |
