October 2005

In the update this month we have an interesting discussion on the importance of public service broadcasting and a piece on how to reverse ITV's decline. We also feature an article on Ulster Television – with an alternative view to last month's ITV50 Top Ten article. There's the second part of our interview with Sir Christopher Chataway on the early days of ITN, and the completion of our comprehensive ‘TVHeroes’ story on Howard Thomas, the quintessential independent broadcaster, and his tussles with Lew Grade. We also have the final part of our article on the end of almost five decades of television from Northam.

This month we also have some behind-the-scenes developments to report. For more than a year we have been working on moving Transdiffusion over to a new content management system that will make the sites easier to maintain. This will be a gradual process, and this month we unveil the first few areas built with the new system, featuring stunning, brand-new designs by Russ Graham. Special thanks also go to Andrew Bowden and Kirk Northrop for developing the system to make this possible.
