Spot the difference



There's something about this picture taken from tonight's Channel Five that's different from what would have been the case only yesterday, and I'm not talking about the property prices either. Yes you've guessed it, Five are now using a logo in the corner of the screen just like virtually all of the copycat digital-only channels out there. Even on their analogue transmission.

So why should we be bothered about this, since the majority of people probably don't bother watching the channel anyway and Five still isn't exactly the byword for the highest quality programming. Well it's somewhat disappointing that after giving up the use of a logo for five years they have fallen back on their old ways.

And we thought that thay had grown up by now.

Then there's the issue of ITV (and perhaps Channel 4) following suit with logos on ITV1 and C4 faster than they may have done otherwise - broadcasters being the copycats they are - together with the fact that these sort of bugs/DOGs tend to get ignored anyway so the broadcasters end up making them bolder and/or larger like ITV has done recently with ITV2/3/4.

Lets get things straight: an on-screen logo (bug/DOG/whatever you want to call that thing in the corner) is superfluous in the digital era, annoys a small but significant number of people and is ignored by the vast majority therefore is pretty much useless as a promotional tool since people tend to concentrate on/remember programmes as opposed to channels.

So why do they still bother with such an outdated and ineffective promotional tool that often cheapens the look of your programmes, including those on BBC Four?
