Radio Four

Media Guardian: C4 radio 'will not be using Brother format'

The news that Channel 4 is to buy a controlling stake in struggling digital radio station OneWord isn't a huge surprise - it's been rumoured for long enough.

But it is quite telling that Britain is moving to a situation where all the national radio stations featuring drama and comedy, will be owned (or at least majority owned!) by the public sector either in the form of the BBC, or by Channel 4.

Proponents of deregulating broadcasting often say that if there's demand, the market will provide. And there is demand - Oneword has doubled its audience in the last year.

The response from the commercial sector? To start pulling out.
