Never mind the quality...

More Freeview slots up for grabs

Whilst the prospect of having extra Freeview channels may be a good thing - but of course it's also dependent on exactly who gets the slot(s) and what they are used for - I can't help but wonder whether any technical compromises are being made in order to make these new slots available. The pressure to provide extra slots must be very intense, especially with the prospect of obtaining £6m+ per slot.

But it's the quote "The additional capacity has been achieved by technology developments that have allowed the company to broadcast the additional channels using a limited amount of bandwidth" that's rather worrying. This could result in the same crippled situation as with DAB radio, which degrades technical quality to a 'minimum' level in order to provide as many services as possible.
