Ratings Review: BARB w/e 30/01/2005

Well, as per last week, Sky One has been beaten by both ITV2 and Sky Sports 1. However this time, the ratings show that whilst ITV2 was helped by American Idol getting just over 1 million, Sky Sports 1 was helped by the Carling Cup Semi-Final featuring the current big two of Premiership Football, Chelsea and Manchester United. Almost 2 million viewers tuned in to watch the game live, which boosted Sky Sports 1's share to 2.5%, the same as all of Sky's movie channels combined. The match also rated better than 21 of Five's top 30 programmes for the same week, which is incredibly impressive.

In multi-channel homes, there was nothing to separate BBc1 from ITV1, with both getting a 19.3 share, however, ITV1 tops BBC1 overall by just 0.1% in all homes, 23.3 to 23.2.

New to the publicly available ratings data is the actual number of viewers reached on a daily or weekly basis, given in thousands. Previously, the info was only given in percentages, and it is interesting to note that the following channels reach less than 100,000 viewers on a weekly basis: Prem Plus, Sky Travel Shop, London TV, MUTV, Teletext Holidays, TWC Re-Loaded and You TV. Given such low ratings, I can't help but wonder if they are really justifying their existence.
