The Times: NTL plans sale of its TV towers to help clear debt
The old IBA transmitters look like they're on the market again following a decision by NTL to sell its network of transmission towers.
Recently the ex-BBC towers, owned by Crown Castle, were sold to National Grid Transco for £1.1billion and NTL's sale could make a huge difference by cutting its debt by a third.
It was the privatisation of the old IBA transmitters network, sold off as National Transcommunications Ltd, that brought us the NTL name. It was bought in 1996 by International CableTel - which later renamed itself to use the NTL name for all its operations, to make use of the good reputation NTL had with its broadcast customers.
Ironically the NTL name isn't that well received in many households - later becoming best linked with appalling customer service and high debts. Funny how things change...
