In August 2003 Berlin became the first major city to turn off analogue, just under a year after digital television was turned on. So successful was the model - backed by a strong government intervention and plenty of subsidies - that law makers in the US are considering whether to do something similar over there.
Meanwhile, the rulers of country that started off the drive to digital, are faffing around and are now saying that digital-only Britain won't happen until around 2012. Their contribution to driving sales? A little label on TV sets saying they won't work once analogue goes.
2012 switch off? The UK will be so lucky...
