Taking the survey

YouGov's Channel of the Year Online Survey

Here's an interesting survey which has been created for the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival in conjunction with BBC Broadcast. There are four groups of questions in the categories of "Channel Awards" (for the best non-terrestrial channel; seomthing I don't feel qualified enough to vote on), "Future of the BBC" (self-explanatory), "Cheating on Charity?" (the relationship between reality TV and charity), and "Grumpy Old Men" (TV of the past compared with the present). I've only completed surveys 2 and 4 since I don't feel qualified enough to fully complete the other two (even though I could theoretically complete the "Cheating on Charity?" one).

Despite their best intentions, these surveys often end up being flawed in the quest to simplify the data input procedure; for example in the "Grumpy Old Men" survey, the "golden era" section is restricted to selecting a decade (ie. 50s, 60s, 70s, etc.) or "Can't decide", but overall they make a reasonable attempt to assess people's opinions on these issues. Be warned though that the surveys appear to reject any e-mail address that uses an 'alias' even if it belongs to a well-regarded ISP as opposed to something like Hotmail.
