OfGums, showing more imagination than the American 555 single option, offer 01632 as a generic area code, plus various ranges for the major cities (but, curiously, only 020 7 not 020 8 as an option).
So, if you're writing a drama, don't forget that your hero lives in MEabhag in the Western Isles or NEacroft in Hampshire or ODcombe in Somerset or even OErfa in Conwy.
Setting being so important in drama, after all.
