So, the Sunday Times reports that the BBC could be broken up into 4 seperate broadcasters for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, according to a leaked government document.
Now, before everybody jumps up and says, oh it's only another Murdoch rag story, just stop and think. Let us consider the options. This kind of break-up would be difficult to implement. After all, who would take responsibility for BBC3, BBC4, Radios 1-7, 1Xtra and 5 Live Sports Extra, and would there be multiple versions of each? If so, that is going to be extremely wasteful. Now, splitting up along lines of News, Sport, TV, Radio and BBCi might be better, but that is not a certainty either.
No, there should be no break-up until someone from outside the BBC has gone inside and gone through the whole organisation from root to branch to see if the BBC can be brought up to date. I don't believe there are a huge amount of problems with the BBC as is, but I do see some problems that need a lot of working over, and most of those problems were not even touched on by the now infamous Hutton Report.
And by the way, the report in the Sunday Times was a strictly neutral piece, with no anti-BBC or pro-Sky bias.
