Vale Howard Philpott, who has died of cancer at the age of 63.

His rich, warm, authoritative voice was regularly heard reading the news on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service from the 1980s onwards. He had originally trained to be a quantity surveyor before switching streams in 1975 to become a trainee studio manager.

From there he progressed to being heard on-air, with breaks to explore other radio-based hobbies. He is survived by his wife Nic.

Unfortunately the link to Howard’s biography now has a 404 error message on the BBC website. The news report, however, is still available to view.
